Romeo and Juliet
Vladimir Pankov is one of the brightest new stars and most charismatic figures in Russian theater today. He never repeats what has been done before. His productions amaze, inspire, thrill, irritate and win international theater awards.
Pankov`s version of Romeo and Juliet promises to be a genuine event. That is not only because he interprets the saddest love story in world drama in the context of conflict between people of different nationalities, of two different ethnic clans. But also because many scenes will be performed in English.
As in all of Pankov`s work there will be much live music and song, interweaving classical works by Prokofiev and Bellini with ethnic music. The actors, including six professional musicians of the SounDrama Studio, will perform the music themselves. Moreover, each of the warring clans will express their sufferings and concerns on instruments that derive from their cultural heritage — the Montagues on classic string and wind instruments, the Capulets on ethnic instruments.
Starring as Romeo is Pavel Akimkin, a frequent collaborator with the Theater of Nations (Shukshin`s Stories and The Swedish Matchstick) and a constant collaborator with Pankov (Passage, Morphine, Gogol Evenings I, II and III). Seseg Khapsasova, a student in Valery Garkalin`s acting class at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts, debuts in the role of Juliet.
