The Physical Plant
The Theatre of Nations is located in a building that is rich with history and is located just a stone's throw from Pushkin Square on Petrovsky Lane, between Petrovka and Bolshaya Dmitrovka streets. From 1946 to 1992 Petrovsky Lane bore the name Moskvin Street, in honor of the great actor Ivan Moskvin, who was a member of the Moscow Art Theatre. In the 18th and 19th centuries the street bore the name of Bogoslovsky, or Theological, Lane. Its name was changed to Petrovsky in the early 20th century to avoid confusion with another Bogoslovsky Lane not far away just off of Tverskoi Boulevard.
The old brick building housing the Theatre of Nations is a typical Moscow architectural monument. It was built on land belonging to the Bakhrushin family of merchants. In 1885 it became the home of the Russian Drama Theatre, one of the country's most significant private playhouses, which was best known to the public as the Korsh Theatre.
