The Theatre Festival of Russian Provincial Cities
The Theatre Festival of Russian Provincial Cities is one of the most important projects of the Theatre of Nations and one of the most significant events in Russia's cultural life. It brings together all of the best work that is created on the stages of Russia's many far-flung cities. The festival runs biannually in Moscow or other locales. It was originally founded in 1994, although it was six long years before the second festival took place. Five runnings of the festival occurred between 2000 and 2006.
The most recent festival, the seventh in all, featured nine theatres from nine Russian cities. Its program reflected the broad spectrum of interests and styles that define the contemporary Russian stage, and determine the variety and focus of new Russian drama. All participating productions were interpretations either of classic Russian drama or of contemporary Russian plays. The festival was opened by one of the classics The Swedish Matchstick, based on stories by Anton Chekhov and produced by the Theatre of Nations. This show was a winner of a Crystal Turandot award in 2007. The productions of each festival are judged by a jury consisting of theatre critics from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Perm.
