The Festival of Alternative Theatre of France offers original, humorous, small performances that boldly attack traditional differences among genres. Visionary actors give free reign to their imagination and sense of humor, encouraging adults to become children again, if only for awhile. These shows are full of surprises.
Surprise No. 1 comes to us from the Quatre Ailes Collective. Its "RW Project" is an interpretation of the poetic sketches of Robert Walser, one of Europe`s most interesting literary innovators of the 20th century. This writer, who loved to wander around the urban landscape, kept a unique diary, which is interpreted here through shadow theater, circus and video. This show is a clever and subtle interpretation of Walser`s praise for urban strolls.

Surprise No. 2, the "Gaff Aff" project, is the brainchild of two amazing performers ? one a dancer, mime and acrobat, the other a musician and DJ. On a stage resembling a giant, spinning vinyl album, a hapless white-collar worker goes through hilarious and virtuosic gyrations as he attempts to maintain a balance between his demands at home and at work.

Surprise No. 3 is "We Didn`t Know", a production of the world-renowned Turak Theatre of Objects. In it people and objects perform as equals. The theatre`s leader Michel Laubu loves to compose humorous tales about a certain island nation and its unique inhabitants. His latest tale is also a detective story, since the plot revolves around the search for a criminal. In the course of the investigation a strange discovery is made: The island witnesses are an extraordinarily fine group of people, although every one of them gives reason to suspect they may be the criminal.

On February 26 Reto Sorg, the Director of the Robert Walser Foundationin Bern, will meet the public. The topic of his talk will be "TheWorld Around Robert Walser." Robert Walser (1878-1956) was a Swiss writer, one of the chief innovators in European literature of the first half of the 20th century. The heroes of his novels, novellas and lyrical vignettes were little people who barely exist on the margins of society, and who are almost always in conflict with that society. The writer`s style contained many features that, by the end of the 20th century, had become commonplace in literature ? unorthodox organization of scenes, self-reflection, and ruminations on language as a focus of literature.
